Daniel H. Pyon

Daniel is a Licensed Resident in Counseling in Virginia, license # 0704015579 which renews on 2/29 of every year. Daniel is under the supervision of Marianne G. Shirilla, MAMFC, LMFT, LPC-S. He is working toward the goal of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

Daniel completed his Master of Arts degree in Counseling at Dallas Theological Seminary. In addition to his ongoing education and training, Daniel draws from his professional and personal background to inform his counseling practice. He has over ten years of experience working as a civil servant and consultant, as well as volunteering in youth, college, and young adult church ministry.

As a counselor, Daniel has experience helping clients discover their values, get “unstuck,” and take action to explore pathways for their lives while overcoming harmful habits, behaviors, and patterns of thinking that may impede their progress. And, as a Korean-American, he approaches matters involving multicultural dynamics with cultural sensitivity and understanding.

While the following topics are not necessarily specific to each life-stage, Daniel has found that he is especially helpful to clients who experience the following types of challenges that affect mental health and contribute to harmful behavioral outcomes (e.g., substance abuse, job/relationship difficulties, self-harm, etc.):

Adolescents (6th-12th grade)

  • Exploring facets of their identity

  • Navigating changing relationships with family and peers

  • Establishing good habits, organizational and study skills

  • Learning to pinpoint, express, and cope with emotions healthily

College Students

  • Adjusting to newfound independence

  • Choosing majors that align with personal interests and values

  • Taking first steps to build career and vocation

  • Navigating expanding relationships healthily

Adults

  • Managing one’s expanding influence and responsibilities

  • Establishing and maintaining healthy relationship behaviors

  • Addressing past trauma, current crises, and family-related stressors

  • Navigating workplace dynamics, career changes, and other major life adjustments

Regardless of life stage or situation, Daniel helps all his clients examine the connection between their experiences, thoughts, core beliefs, emotions, and behaviors using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). He also helps clients envision and explore choosing meaningful pathways for their future through a blend of Narrative and Existential Therapies. Additionally, he helps clients process and heal from traumatic life experiences through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

Daniel works with clients of all backgrounds and respects the diversity of experiences, values, and worldviews that clients bring with them to the counseling session. He is a Christian and is comfortable addressing faith-related matters with clients in an open and non-judgmental way.
