Kristina M. Heaton Telehealth In Person
Intern in Marriage and Family Therapy
Sometimes life can feel heavier than we expected. I believe everyone deserves a space where they feel safe to be themselves and supported through life’s challenges. Whether you are navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, a season of transition, or simply feeling stuck, I hope therapy can be a place to slow down, gain perspective, and find a path forward.
I work with children (ages 4 and up), teens, couples, families, and adults navigating anxiety, behavioral concerns, relational strain, infertility, and life stressors. I bring warmth, compassion, and curiosity into the therapy room, striving to create a welcoming, collaborative space where you feel heard and understood. My hope is that you feel comfortable showing up as you are and exploring your experiences at your own pace.
Children and teens face many changes as they grow and find their place in the world. From school stress and friendship difficulties to anxiety, blended-family dynamics, and transitions at home, such as separation and divorce, I help young clients build confidence and develop skills for navigating challenges. In my work with children, I utilize play therapy to create an engaging and fun environment while learning skills such as emotional regulation and problem solving. I value partnering with parents and caregivers to better understand and support each child’s needs together. With teens, I utilize talk therapy while incorporating their specific interests such as art or games when valuable.
Relationships can bring tremendous joy, but also seasons of conflict, disconnection, and uncertainty. Whether you are dating, preparing for marriage, or have been married for years, I work with couples who want to strengthen their connection, navigate recurring disagreements, or prepare for a new season together. I have a particular interest in premarital counseling and am Prepare/Enrich Certified. I also welcome couples navigating infertility and major life transitions. My hope is to help partners understand one another more deeply and approach difficult conversations with compassion.
I work with families navigating conflict, transitions, and changing dynamics, helping family members find healthier ways of relating. Each family member brings a unique perspective and understanding those differences can open the door to stronger communication and connection. I also welcome individuals seeking support through difficult emotions, personal challenges, and life changes.
My approach is relational and integrative, drawing from systems theory, attachment-based perspectives, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), play therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I believe understanding our challenges often involves exploring the relationships and experiences that have shaped us. When meaningful to you, I welcome the integration of faith and spirituality into our work together.
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel intimidating. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. I would be honored to walk alongside you toward greater clarity, connection, growth, and healing.
I am an Intern in Marriage and Family Therapy pursuing my M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Toccoa Falls and licensure as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Virginia. I work under the supervision of Marianne Shirilla, MAMFC, LMFT, LPC-S.
I offer in-person and telehealth sessions. The fee for an initial 60-minute intake session is $205, and subsequent 55–60-minute sessions are $185. I accept Aetna, Cigna, Virginia Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, CareFirst DC Capital Region plans (including FEP Blue), and out-of-state Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Insurance coverage and reimbursement cannot be guaranteed; in-network claims are billed through my supervisor. For clients with out-of-network benefits, I can provide a statement to submit for potential reimbursement. I also participate in the Access Care Program, which offers a significantly reduced self-pay rate of $60.
I offer a free 20-minute phone consultation. To schedule, email kristina@synergycounselingllc.com or call 571-506-4948. You can also learn more through my Psychology Today profile.
Outside of therapy, I enjoy reading, hiking with my husband, training our puppy, and playing games with friends. I am currently accepting new clients and welcome the opportunity to connect with you.
